The Excitement and Anxieties of Being a Parent

The excitement of becoming a parent is one of the most amazing, yet overwhelming and daunting times of your life. Suddenly, you are responsible for the welfare, guidance, and protection of a child. Whilst it is going to be the best job you have ever had, it won’t be without its challenges. Babies come without instructions, so you need to be prepared to learn on the job, so to speak.

Making sure that you go easy on yourself expectation-wise is really helpful in the early stages. After all, life as you know it has changed and you will need time to adapt. Even though you may feel like the luckiest person in the world, you will also feel tired, confused and worried at times; these are all completely normal feelings.

Learning to do parenting your way is the best and, in my opinion, most effective strategy. Taking this approach means that you won’t waste time and energy comparing yourself to other parents. Instead, your focus will be exactly where it needs to be – on your precious, beautiful bundle of joy.

Whilst your main priority will always be your baby, you also need time and space for yourself, so don’t be afraid to ask for support off your nearest and dearest. This will ensure you can have the odd date night with your partner, or a catch up with your friends, which really can do the world of good for your wellbeing.

What I really love and the reason why I completely support Little Tikes’ Get the Grow How campaign is that even in times when you’re unable to leave your home, there is a support network waiting there for you online. By just logging onto Facebook on your mobile phone, tablet or PC you have a community of people at your fingertips ready to offer support and advice whenever you need it.

Always remember – those early months are utterly precious and irreplaceable. They pass in the blink of an eye, so try not to worry about the future; instead, soak up every special second with your new arrival.
